A story that begins
in 1976

Every slab tells a story millions of years long; ours, more simply, begins in 1976. That is the year Michelessi opened its premises on the Via Pontina, in Aprilia, in the province of Latina, and began working marble for the building industry and for furniture makers. We have never stopped since: half a century of bespoke marble craftsmanship, for architecture and interiors, with the same care as on the first day — and always, proudly, in Italy.

Over these fifty years the company has grown without changing its nature. Our workshops are home to highly qualified people, specialised in the production of bespoke works of quality: people who know marble as few others do, who tend to its detail and its form, and who can answer any request — from the simplest marble threshold to the most complex projects, working from your own drawings whenever you wish.

A staircase can be a simple connection or an architectural gesture. Here it is unmistakably the latter: white steps rise cantilevered against the dark wall of vertical slats, protected by a transparent pane of glass that lets them breathe, as if the ascent took place in mid-air. The scene unfolds in two acts: on one side the deep shadow of the dark walls, on the other the whiteness of grey-veined white marble, wrapping the wall and raising the bathtub on a platform cut from the same stone. The oval tub, white and absolute, floats in this suspended light: the round mirror hanging from its strap, the taps tracing an arc of silver, the shower kept behind slender panes of glass. It is the blue hour, when the sky holds its last light and the water begins to glow from within. The pool shines like a turquoise gem set in stone: the pale coping traces its broken perimeter, the outdoor paving accompanies each step, the great grey slabs of the perimeter walls reflect the spotlights like a theatre backdrop. All around, the dark leaves of the garden and the jars aligned in the illuminated niche: every element in its place, as in a stage design. In the heart of the workshop, the head of a numerically controlled machining centre descends onto the slab anchored to its suction cups: water wraps the tool in a crown of fine spray, cooling the cut, carrying away the dust, and for an instant technique resembles a fountain.
