Pale stone
Fire at the centre of the white wall
The white partition crosses the room like a page; at its centre, the picture-frame fireplace sets the fire at eye level. Bands of pale stone run above and below the hearth, while to one side an insert of split-face stone adds its minute weave, almost a mineral fabric. The flames, alive behind glass, become the most beautiful picture in the house: changeable, warm, never the same. The lens widens the field and finds life all around: the low glass table with an open book, the great stone dish, the rug drawing discreet arabesques, the dark chair beyond the wall. Everything turns around that burning rectangle. This is the very idea of the frame fireplace: treating fire as a work of art to be hung, framed in true materials. Michelessi interprets it through bespoke marble and stone work, joining contemporary rigour to the hand of Italian craftsmanship.
