Indoor marble kitchens
Kitchen Doors, Blum Hinges and Finishes: How to Choose
You judge a kitchen by the doors you open every day and by the way they close. Here, explained one by one, are the door types (flat, framed, with handle, with groove, with a recessed grip), the finishes (melamine, lacquer, open-pore, solid wood, Fenix, glass, marble and Dekton) and the hardware: every kitchen we make is fitted with Blum hinges and runners with soft-close. Everything is made in Aprilia, between Rome and Latina, where we have worked stone since 1976; the quotation and the 3D design are free.
First of all: the door is what you touch
The marble worktop is the most beautiful part, but the door is the part you use most: you open and close it dozens of times a day. That is why, when we design a kitchen in Aprilia, we start from the door even before the colour: from the way it opens, from the grip, from the sound it makes when it closes. Our modular collections (Domina, Noè, Era 02 and Volo 01) cover every family of door described below; the stone worktop, on the other hand, is cut by us in the workshop.
Door types, one by one
Flat door
A plain slab panel without frames: the foundation of the modern kitchen. It takes any finish (melamine, lacquer, Fenix, veneer) and pairs well with veined marble, because it leaves the stone in the leading role. It is the door of the Domina collection in its flat version and of Era 02.
Framed door
A perimeter frame with a central panel, flat or slightly recessed. In solid oak or ash (Noè collection) it gives the kitchen a joinery character; lacquered, it becomes classic without being old-fashioned. It asks for a little more care when cleaning the inner corners.
Door with handle
The simplest and sturdiest solution: bridge, bar or knob handles in burnished metal, brass or steel. In Era 02 the handle is built into the top profile of the door. It is the right choice for those who open with wet hands or hands covered in flour: the grip is always secure.
Grooved door (handleless with a channel)
A recessed profile, horizontal or vertical, running between one door and the next: your fingers enter the channel and pull. The front stays clean, with no handles, and the kitchen reads as a single volume. The channel can match the door, or be in aluminium or brass; in our kitchens with a cantilevered worktop it becomes a shadow line that continues the drawing of the stone.
Handleless door with a recessed grip
The grip is carved directly into the thickness of the door (Volo 01 collection): the same clean effect as the channel, with an even more natural ergonomics and no added profile. It is the door we recommend in kitchens with a monolithic marble island, where every extra line is a distraction.
Lift-up doors, for wall units
In wall units the door does not swing sideways but lifts: a simple lift-up, a bi-fold or a stay-lift. It opens with one hand and stays in any position, so you never bump your head. It is the best solution above the island and above the hob.
Hinges: why we fit Blum
A door is only as good as its hinge. On every kitchen we deliver we fit Blum hinges and runners, the Austrian manufacturer that is the standard for quality kitchens worldwide. What changes, in practice:
- Soft-close: the door slows down over the last few centimetres and closes by itself, silently, even if you push it hard.
- Three-way adjustment: height, depth and tilt are set with a screwdriver, without removing anything; the gaps between doors stay perfect even after years.
- Wide opening: the door opens until it completely clears the cabinet, so baskets and internal drawers slide out without catching.
- Push-to-open for handleless doors: a light press on the front and the door opens by itself; it combines with the channel or with the recessed grip.
- Full-extension drawers: the runner brings the whole drawer out, right to the back; deep drawers carry pots and plates without sagging, and glide the same way full or empty.
- Lift systems for wall units: the mechanism holds the door open in any position, with an opening force adjusted to the weight of the door.
Hinges are only seen when the door is open, but they are felt every day: it is the first detail on which we never cut corners.
Door finishes
| Finish | How it looks | Resistance and care | With which marble |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smooth melamine | Plain colour or wood effect, matt or gloss | Very resistant to scratches and humidity, wipes clean with a cloth; the most affordable | Carrara, Calacatta: the white and grey of the stone take any colour |
| Open-pore melamine | A surface with the wood grain in relief, to the touch | Like the smooth one, but hides the marks of use better | Travertine and Calacatta Oro, for a warm pairing |
| Gloss lacquer | Mirror-like, deep in colour | Sensitive to scratches and shows fingerprints: handle with care | Nero Marquina or Statuario, for a sharp contrast |
| Matt anti-fingerprint lacquer | Velvety, soft to the eye and to the touch | Does not hold fingerprints, resists micro-scratches | All of them: it is the easiest finish to pair |
| Wood veneer | Real wood in a thin leaf: oak, walnut, ash | Good resistance; revived with oil or wax every few years | Calacatta Viola, Verde Guatemala: wood warms the cold stone |
| Solid wood | Full timber, with unique knots and grain (Noè collection) | Lasts for decades; can be sanded and re-treated | Travertine and Carrara, for a workshop kitchen |
| Fenix | Deep matt, full colours, soft to the touch | Micro-scratches are repaired with heat (thermal healing); holds no fingerprints. Indoors only | Nero Marquina and dark marbles, for a monochrome front |
| Glass | Clear, satin or back-painted, on an aluminium frame | Easy to clean; shows the contents of the wall units | Statuario and Calacatta, in light kitchens |
| Marble or Dekton on the door | A thin slab bonded to a light backing: the door becomes stone | Like the worktop: it needs sealing and care; it is heavy, so it needs the right hinge | The same material as the worktop and the island sides: one single volume |
How to pair doors and a marble worktop
Three rules we use in our projects. One leading role only: if the marble is heavily veined (Calacatta Viola, Arabescato), the door must be calm, flat and plain; if the marble is quiet (Carrara, Travertine), the door can afford wood or a bold colour. Temperature: cold marbles (whites and greys) sit well with warm doors (wood, sand, sage green); warm marbles (travertine, Calacatta Oro) with cold doors (grey, midnight blue, black). The handle as a jewel: brass with white and purple marbles, burnished steel with black and green marbles.
How we decide, in our Aprilia showroom
Bring a photograph of the room and, if you have them, the measurements. In the showroom on the Via Pontina we open and close the doors of the four collections with you, compare the finish samples against real marble slabs, and our technical office draws the kitchen in three dimensions with the worktop, the doors and the appliances in place. The quotation is free; in Lazio the site survey is free as well. From there, if you would like to start from a simple plan, look at the kitchen layouts to start from, or at all the modular units on one page.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Which door works best with a heavily veined marble?
A flat, plain-coloured door, in matt anti-fingerprint lacquer or in Fenix: it leaves the stone in the leading role. With a Calacatta Viola or an Arabescato, a visible-grain wooden door or a bright colour ends up fighting with the veins.
Can Blum hinges be adjusted after installation?
Yes: the hinges we fit adjust on three axes, in height, depth and tilt, with a screwdriver and without removing the door. We do it on delivery, and it can be done again over the years if the house settles.
Grooved door or door with a recessed grip: what is the difference?
The channel is a recessed profile running between the doors, matching or in metal; the recessed grip is carved into the thickness of the door itself, with no added profile. The clean effect is the same; the recessed grip is even more essential and we recommend it with monolithic marble islands.
Can I have the doors in the same marble as the worktop?
Yes: we bond a thin slab of marble or Dekton onto a light backing, so the door weighs the right amount and the hinge carries it; worktop, island sides and doors become one single volume. It is sealed and cared for like the worktop.
Is Fenix suitable for the doors of an outdoor kitchen?
No: Fenix is an indoor material, for doors and worktops. Outdoors, for the technical doors of our outdoor kitchens, we use stainless steel or treated wood, and stone for the structure.
How much more does a lacquered door cost compared with melamine?
It depends on the model, the colour and the quantities, so we only say it in the quotation, which is free and itemised line by line. In general melamine is the most affordable choice, while matt anti-fingerprint lacquer and solid wood are the most refined.
