From the block,
to the book-matched slabs

01 A rough block of Calacatta, the quarry skin still on its sides, rests on its stand in the half-light of the atelier. Mallet, chisel and pitching tool are already on the floor: the slabs are still all inside the stone.

02 Blow after blow the edges are squared and the face is flattened. Then the diamond wire, water running, cuts the block in two; hand grinding with water smooths the faces little by little, and the two slabs are brought together so the vein runs from one to the other.

03 Last comes the polish: the matte surface turns to a mirror, the gold of the vein lights up and reflects on the joint, a single butterfly. Two book-matched slabs remain, and a veil of dust on the floor.

Imagine walking through a library whose volumes are slabs three metres tall: each bay holds a different marble, and the light that grazes it sets it aglow like a cathedral window. This is a vision from our design studio: the warehouse turned into a gallery, where choosing a slab becomes a solemn promenade. You point to the window; the cutting is ours.

Design vision: a freshly sawn marble block opened like a book, its veining mirrored in perfect symmetry

When the saw passes through the block and the two halves open, the veining mirrors itself: the book-match, the moment the stone reveals a pattern no one has ever seen. In this project from our visions the block has just been opened, its flanks still rough from the quarry, its polished faces answering one another like the pages of a book. The materials catalogue

Three paths within
the same passion

Every project begins with a choice: the material. For fifty years Michelessi has been selecting marbles, granites, onyxes and stones from every part of the world and bringing them to its Aprilia workshop, where bespoke marble craftsmanship turns them into kitchens, bathrooms, staircases, floors and furnishing elements. This catalogue gathers our materials by category: to walk through it is to cross the entire repertoire of stone, from the candour of the great statuary whites to the transparencies of the most precious slabs.

The natural stones are the foundation: marbles and granites chosen with care at the quarries through the professionalism of our technicians, the essential base for the quality of semi-finished and finished pieces. The semi-precious stones are the wonder: quartz, agate, amethyst and malachite cut and composed into unique slabs, born to astonish all who behold them. The finishes are the voice: sandblasting, honing, polishing, bush hammering and the other treatments that give every slab the character its project demands.

Blue veins on white, an invitation to the precious

The cover of the section devoted to semi-precious stones is itself a promise: a slab with a warm white ground, crossed by blue veins that flow on the diagonal like marine currents, while golden and amber threads weave through the pattern and warm it with precious reflections. A wave of white marble crosses the frame: thin blades, set side by side, rise and fall like the crest of a cliff sculpted by the sea. The black and white photograph strips the scene to its essence: what remains is the light, the shadow between the blades, the contrast between the honed flanks and the deliberately raw summits, where the stone keeps the memory of its natural fracture. The water bursts into a cloud of droplets and for an instant the cut becomes visible: the yellow machine advances across the stone, the jet cools the blade and washes the surface, and the beige marble, ordered in strata as thin as the pages of a book, lets itself be crossed with millimetric precision. Our marbles and materials: questions and answers

Which marbles do you work with, and where do they come from?

We select marble, granite, onyx and natural stone slab by slab from quarries around the world: Calacatta Oro and Nero Marquina, Bianco Carrara and Statuario, Verde Alpi and Portoro, through to Honey Onyx and Amber Onyx. The slabs come to our workshop in Aprilia, between Rome and Latina, where they are cut and finished to measure. The catalogue is arranged in three families: natural stone, semi-precious slabs and finishes.

Does marble stain? How should it be cared for?

Marble is calcium carbonate, so it is sensitive to acids: lemon, vinegar, wine or tomato left on the surface for too long can dull the polish. A protective treatment after installation and everyday cleaning with water and a neutral soap keep it looking its best for many years; honed or sandblasted finishes are more forgiving than a mirror polish. For worktops that see the hardest use we can offer Dekton or quartz instead, made to the same bespoke design.

How thick is a marble worktop?

Marble worktops are typically made from 2 or 3 cm slabs; with a mitred edge the visible thickness can be increased as far as the design requires without adding weight. The right thickness depends on the stone, the spans and the use: we settle it together at the design stage and confirm it in the quotation.

What are semi-precious slabs and finishes?

Semi-precious slabs are made of quartz, agate, amethyst and malachite cut and composed into one-of-a-kind panels, often backlit for bar counters, feature walls and statement tops. Finishes are the voice of the stone: sandblasting, honing, polishing and the other surface treatments change how a slab feels to the touch and how it catches the light. You can see samples and finishes in our Aprilia showroom before choosing.

Can everything be made to measure, with book-matched veining?

Yes. Every kitchen, bathroom, staircase or floor starts from the slab chosen with you, cut to size, with veins book-matched or open-matched wherever the design calls for it. Work begins with a site survey and a 3D design, so you see how the veins will meet before the first cut. This is the bespoke marble craftsmanship we have practised in Aprilia since 1976.

Do you deliver and install abroad?

Yes. Everything is designed and built in our Aprilia workshop, then shipped and installed by our own team in Italy and overseas; our Dubai project was made exactly this way. Lead times and installation arrangements are set out in the quotation, in English or Italian.
