Hall fully clad in marble with LED-lit angular staircase, veined white marble walls and dark grey panels

Since 1976

Marble staircases,
ascents crafted to perfection

Steps designed around your spatial and artistic vision: from block to installation, every staircase is born in our Aprilia workshop, in the heart of Italy.

The staircase — a Michelessi vision

One tread at a time,
from block to wall

01 In the dark stone hall the wall is bare: only the chiselled sockets and chalk lines show where the treads will rise. Two raw Statuario blocks wait on the pallet, mallet and chisels on the floor.

02 The craftsmen split off the crust, square the blocks and dress the edges blow by blow; then they carry the treads to the wall one at a time, slide them into their sockets, wedge them, check them with the level and prop them. The flight climbs slowly, from the left toward the light.

03 The stone is honed by hand, the props come away, then polishing brings up the gloss and the grey veins. Last, brass strips slide in under each tread and light it: the staircase is whole, and the dust is already swept.

The ascent — a Michelessi vision

Light
walks down the steps

01 An eye of light opens in the dark: the round skylight reveals the Calacatta helix suspended in the gloom.

02 The beam sharpens: the brass handrail draws the spiral and the veining of the treads lights up one step at a time.

03 The light floods the floor: the gold of the marble runs from wall to wall, while all around the room stays in the dark.

Vision 01 — From our drawing board

A helix of Calacatta
suspended in the void

CALACATTA GOLD · SELF-SUPPORTING HELIX · BRASS RING

Design vision: helical staircase in Calacatta gold marble with no supports, seen from below as it spirals up through the dark towards a brass ring

Seen from below, the Calacatta helix climbs twisting through the dark without a single column or tie: nothing but stone resting on its own geometry, while veins of gold follow the spiral like currents. High above, a ring of brass crowns the ascent like the rim of an upturned well. This is a vision from our drawing board — a project drawn to show how high marble can climb: should a staircase like this feel like yours, we will measure it upon your space.

Vision 02 — From our drawing board

Stone leaves the wall,
light bears it up

GOLD-VEINED WHITE · CANTILEVERED TREADS · THREAD OF LIGHT

Design vision: solid white marble steps cantilevered from a dark stone wall, with a thread of golden light beneath every tread

Each step leaves the dark stone wall like a shelf of solid marble, and beneath every tread runs a thread of golden light that seems to carry it in place of any structure. The void between one step and the next is part of the design: the ascent becomes a run of white blades lit against the dark. This too is a vision from our workshop, imagined for those who wish for a staircase that seems to weigh nothing at all.

The collection

Every step, an invitation
to rise with elegance

There is a moment, in every home, when the footstep lifts: that is where a staircase ceases to be a passage and becomes architecture. For fifty years Michelessi has designed and crafted bespoke staircases in marble and natural stone, made entirely in Italy in our Aprilia workshop: every flight is born of your spatial and artistic vision, measured against the room that welcomes it, the light it receives, the gesture of those who will climb it every day.

In this collection you will find all the voices of stone: mirror-polished white Carrara, travertine in the warm tones of sand, the deep greens of Levanto and Guatemala, Grigio Carnico crossed by veins of ice, through to marbles of rare character such as Blue Light Ivory and Sodalite Royal. And every form of ascent: curved flights and spiral staircases, floating steps that let the light filter through, double flights worthy of a grand residence, outdoor stairways that stand up to sun and rain. This is bespoke marble craftsmanship: choosing the right slab, orienting the veining, refining every edge until the joint can no longer be seen.

Leaf through the photographs that follow: each one tells of a real project, a material, a rule of the craft faithfully observed. And when one of these ascents feels like your own, write to us: the estimate is free and with us, listening always comes before design.

Project vision: outdoor staircase in light stone with steel handrails amid modern white architecture under a blue sky

Pale stone — Outdoors — a Michelessi vision

Staircase of Light: White Geometry Under the Sky

Beneath a sky brushed with drifting clouds, daylight glides across candid white volumes and settles upon a broad outdoor staircase in pale stone. The steps rise with a measured cadence, flanked by slender steel handrails that trace precise diagonals against the white surfaces. Shadows stretch across the wide stone paving, measuring the space, giving it room to breathe; every line seems drawn to carry the gaze upward. This is the image that opens the Michelessi staircase collection: an invitation to think of ascent as architecture, not mere passage. In bespoke marble craftsmanship, this is the promise we renew with every project: steps designed around your spatial and artistic vision, proportions studied with care, materials chosen one by one. Italian craftsmanship lives in this attention: the finished edge, the perfectly level tread, the joint that disappears from view. If you imagine a staircase of this quiet power for your home or your building, tell us about your space: the estimate is free, and with us, listening always comes before design.

Sinuous modern white marble staircase with wall-recessed handrail and a strip of light tracing its curve

White marble

The Sinuous Curve of White Marble

A line of light runs along the wall and yields to the curve of the staircase, like a breath accompanying the climb. It is the handrail, recessed into the wall and underscored by a luminous strip that follows its sinuous profile: a design detail that turns a daily gesture into a quiet choreography. The white marble steps widen at the base in concentric waves, soft as folds of fabric, then gather themselves and rise with elegance toward the upper floor, escorted by a weightless balustrade. The honed surface returns the light gently, without glare: this is the silent quality of Michelessi's bespoke marble work, where every tread is shaped to follow the exact curve of the drawing. Here the contemporary language meets the artisan's hand: no superfluous ornament, only material, light and proportion. A staircase like this does not simply connect two floors: it defines the atmosphere of the entire home. If you desire a marble staircase of fluid lines, drawn around your own vision, we are ready to accompany you from the first sketch to the final polish.

Linear modern staircase in Rosewood marble in a bright living room with grey sofa and green plants

Rosewood marble

Simple Lines in Rosewood Marble

Daylight pours in generously and crosses the living room, caressing the steps as they rise with a simple, assured stride. This is a staircase of essential lines, crafted in Rosewood marble: a surface of soft veining and warm tones that brings warmth to the room without surrendering the solidity of stone. Around it, the house lives: the grey sofa, the soft rug, the plants lending a note of green beside the flight. The staircase does not impose itself; it converses. It accompanies the open space and divides it with discretion, while the steps at its base rest naturally upon one another, widening toward the pale floor. Here lies the craft: bespoke marble work as Michelessi conceives it always begins with the room that will receive it, its proportions, the light it welcomes. Italian craftsmanship knows how to make simple what is not simple at all: precise cuts, finished edges, flawless installation. A marble staircase like this becomes part of the furnishing, an element crossed each day almost without noticing, and for that very reason it must be perfect. Tell us how you live your spaces: we will design the staircase that follows them.

Curved staircase in light cream marble with wall-lit steps and wrought iron balustrade

Cream marble

Soft Rounded Forms in Illuminated Cream Marble

In the warm half-light of the room, each step ignites with its own small glow: points of light run along the wall and guide the ascent like a procession of lanterns. The staircase curves gently, in cream marble of pale tonality, opening at its base in rounded steps that invite the first stride. The wrought iron balustrade rises lightly, its turned balusters punctuating the curve, while the polished floor doubles every reflection and deepens the sensation of softness. It is a scene to be observed in silence: the material, the raking light that reveals the honed surface, the shadow that rounds each edge, the small dark table resting in the corner. Michelessi crafts marble staircases in precisely this way, made to measure: the curvature calculated, the lighting integrated exactly where it belongs, the finish that welcomes the hand. Elegance is the sum of these invisible attentions, layered one upon another. A staircase lit step by step is not merely beautiful: it is welcoming, safe, alive even after dark. If you dream of an ascent like this, soft and luminous, let us talk: every staircase we design is drawn around your spatial and artistic vision.

Staircase in light noce travertine with dark risers and wrought iron balustrade decorated with gilded accents

Walnut travertine

Noce Travertine and Iron with Gilded Accents

Light noce travertine unfurls its golden clouds across every tread, while the dark risers provide the counterpoint, step after step, like the rests in a musical score. The wrought iron balustrade rises with resolve, softened by tracery and gilded accents that capture the light and return it in small gleams. Below, the polished floor mirrors the flight and prolongs its drawing. It is an image that tells of an ancient equilibrium: warm stone and forged metal, the honed surface and the hand-worked ornament. Travertine demands a knowing eye and deep respect: its veining must be followed, never forced, and every cut must honour the natural movement of the material. Michelessi creates these staircases entirely to measure, choosing the slabs one by one and refining every edge, every joint, every finish. This is a heritage handed down through generations: hands that know the stone and give it a form that is domestic, daily, and yet precious. A travertine staircase like this accompanies a home for generations, ageing with the grace of true materials. If you love warm tones and rich workmanship, tell us about your project: we will design it together.

Modern staircase in Blue Light Ivory marble with blue-grey veining, glass parapet and steel handrail

Blue Light Ivory

Blue Light Ivory: Veining Like Wind

The veining races across the ivory surface in an impetuous blue-grey weave that seems drawn by the wind. This is Blue Light Ivory marble, the absolute protagonist of this modern staircase: every step is a different painting, and yet the flight maintains perfect coherence, the fruit of a meticulous pairing of the slabs. The glass parapet lets the stone breathe, the steel handrail cuts the scene with a clean diagonal, and in the background the second flight appears through the transparencies, multiplying the planes of reading. The light, entering through the glazing, kindles the crystals of the marble and reveals the depth of its natural design. Choosing a material like this means entrusting it to those who know how to read it: in bespoke marble work, Michelessi selects and orients every slab so that the veining converses along the entire ascent. This is the value of Italian craftsmanship: transforming the expressive force of stone into an architectural element that is precise, safe, and made for every day. A marble staircase of strong character demands an equally strong design: if your space deserves a material that refuses to go unnoticed, this is the point of departure.

Outdoor travertine staircase with glass parapet, poolside edge and a small tree among white pebbles

Travertine — Outdoors

Travertine in the Open Air, Toward the Bridge

In the open air, under full light, travertine reveals its natural vocation: to endure with elegance. The outdoor staircase rises toward the upper walkway accompanied by a glass parapet and a steel handrail, while the cladding of horizontal slabs draws the flank of the flight in perfect order. Beside it, the water of the pool brings a note of intense blue, and a small tree with red leaves emerges from a bed of white pebbles: nature entering the design, tamed yet alive. The travertine, with its porous texture and warm sand tones, binds every element together: paving, steps, retaining walls. It is proof that the art of marble and natural stone does not live indoors alone: Michelessi designs and builds bespoke outdoor staircases, studying thicknesses, finishes and installation to guarantee endurance through the years. Stone worked by the rules of the art can stand beneath sun and rain without losing its grace: it is a matter of the right materials and of respect for the craft. If you are imagining a garden, a terrace or an outdoor entrance worthy of the nobility of stone, this travertine already points the way.

Close-up detail of a spiral staircase in ivory-veined marble with flared-base steel balusters

Ivory marble — Detail

Spiral Detail: Marble Seen Up Close

Sometimes it is the detail that tells the whole story of the craft. Here the gaze draws close enough to graze the stone: the marble tread with its ivory and honey veining, the polished edge gathering the light, the central hollow following the drawing of the spiral staircase. The steel balusters flare at their base like upturned chalices, resting upon the stone with an almost delicate gesture: metal and marble meet at a precise point, calculated to the millimetre. At this close distance, one sees what from afar can only be intuited: the perfectly honed surface, the soft reflection, the continuity of the veining from one step to the next. This is the signature of bespoke marble work: no edge left to chance, no approximate joint. Michelessi refines its marble staircases to this level of detail, because a spiral is a mechanism of precision as much as an object of beauty: every element must lock into the next without hesitation. Italian craftsmanship reveals itself up close, very close: it is there that the human hand leaves its finest imprint. Look at this photograph and you will know what we mean when we speak of care.

Floating staircase with monolithic marble-clad cantilevered steps, light filtering between the treads

Floating steps

Floating Steps, Light Filtering Through

The steps detach themselves from the wall and remain suspended, one after another, like the keys of a silent piano. Light enters through the tall vertical glazing, filters between the treads and lightens the entire composition: this is the principle of this floating staircase, conceived so the room never loses its luminosity. The monolithic planes, clad in marble over a steel structure anchored to the wall, cross the space with an exact rhythm; the pale wood of the wall accompanies the ascent with its warmth, while a large artwork of black and white gestures watches over the flight like an artist's counterpoint. Everything here speaks of equilibrium: weights that vanish, calibrated thicknesses, invisible anchorings. Bespoke marble work reaches its most technical proof in staircases like this: Michelessi unites the engineering of the structure with the sensibility of the finish, so that the stone appears to float without effort. It is craftsmanship unafraid of modernity: it embraces it, measures it, refines it by hand. If you desire a staircase that lets the light pass and frees the gaze, floating steps are an answer of rare elegance: weightless to the eye, unshakeable underfoot.

Black quartz staircase with steel structure and brushed steel railing beside an exposed elevator

Black quartz

Black Quartz and Steel in Dialogue

Black quartz absorbs the light and returns it in depth: every step of this staircase carries the density of a night sky crossed by pale clouds. The steel structure supports the flight with constructive candour, the brushed steel railing runs parallel to the steps, and beside it the elevator with its exposed frame completes the circulation of this residential building. The great expanses of glazing bring in the green of the trees and the brightness of the day, which glides over the dark surfaces and awakens their mineral movement. This is a project that declares its materials without shyness: dark stone, metal, glass, each in its rightful place. In the bespoke creation of staircases for residential buildings and shared spaces, Michelessi works alongside marble with materials such as quartz, chosen for resilience and character: surfaces that withstand daily passage while keeping their elegance intact. Here the artisan tradition becomes technical mastery as well: flawless installation, finished edges, steel details aligned with rigour. If your project demands robustness without renouncing the expressive force of dark material, this staircase shows how completely the two worlds can coexist.

Close-up of polished white Carrara marble steps with straight finished edges and grey veining

White Carrara

The Radiant White of Carrara Marble

Up close, white Carrara marble reveals its inner light: a radiance that does not rest upon the surface but seems to rise from the heart of the stone. The steps follow one another in the foreground, their straight edges finished with care, their crisp arrises drawing a geometry of planes and slender shadows. Grey veining crosses the white with discretion, like thoughts barely spoken, and the reflections of the glazing glide across the mirror-polished surface. It is the close portrait of a finish executed by the rules of the art: the polishing that exalts the crystal of the marble, the worked edge that completes every tread, the installation that keeps each joint impeccable. Carrara marble is an emblem of Italian craftsmanship, and for that very reason it forgives no approximation: Michelessi works it to measure with the respect owed to its transparency and its delicacy. A staircase this luminous turns every ascent into an elegant gesture and brings brightness to the whole room, reflecting the light of day like a sheet of still water. If you seek the most celebrated white of the Italian tradition for your marble staircase, this image shows you, at close range, what quality means.

Circular staircase with Verde Levanto marble treads and white marble risers in an elegant entrance hall with bas-relief

Verde Levanto

Verde Levanto in a Spiral of Light

In the entrance hall, the staircase winds like a ribbon: the treads in Verde Levanto marble, deep and dark as a forest after rain, alternate with risers in purest white marble, and the transparent balustrade lets the gaze run the full length of the spiral. On the ground, the pale floor draws a great circular geometry that converses with the curve of the flight; in the illuminated niche, a white bas-relief observes the scene, while the glazed door reveals a glimpse of green outside. It is a composition of rare harmony, where every material has its role: the intense green lends character, the white gives breath, the dark handrail accompanies the hand with its unbroken line to the floor above. Pairing two marbles so different demands sensitivity and craft: in bespoke marble work, Michelessi studies contrasts and proportions so that the staircase becomes the elegant heart of the entrance, the first story a house tells to those who enter. It is the tradition of the great residences: measured, cultivated, without ostentation. If you desire a marble staircase that unites colour and classicism, Verde Levanto upon white is a chord that never ceases to enchant.

Circular staircase in light marble with recessed glass parapet in a spacious double-height interior

Pale marble

Circular Elegance, Glass and Stone

The staircase descends coiling through the space like a slow gesture, and the recessed glass parapet follows it without ever breaking its line. The warm tones of the light marble envelop everything: the steps, the floors, the walls of great golden slabs, in a double-height interior where the light sculpts the surfaces and opens unexpected depths. The dark handrail draws a continuous curve in the air, slender as a stroke of ink, while above, the green of a plant leans out over the balustrade. Observing the composition, the flights and floors interlace in a geometry of staggered curves with the complexity of scenographic architecture. To build a circular staircase like this is to command the material: every tread has a different profile, every slab must be cut to the exact curve of the design, every element of glass must fit into the stone to the millimetre. This is the terrain where Michelessi's bespoke marble work gives its finest: complex geometries, invisible joints, surfaces that pursue one another without interruption. Italian craftsmanship can be this too: calculation and poetry in the same hand. If your project calls for bold curves, entrust them to those who know how to build them.

Curved staircase in polished white marble with glass parapet and wooden handrail in a salon with grand piano

Polished white marble

The Staircase at Centre Stage

In the salon, beside the grand piano, the staircase rises in a luminous curve: steps in polished white marble, a glass parapet with steel inserts, a handrail in light wood that welcomes the hand with warmth. Every tread is underlined by a discreet light that, come evening, turns the flight into a softly illuminated trail. All around, the room breathes domestic elegance: the crystal chandelier, the pale armchairs, the daylight entering through the windows and multiplying across the honed surfaces of the floor. The staircase holds centre stage without overbearing: it is a piece of furnishing in the fullest sense, perhaps the most important of all, for it joins the floors of the house in one harmonious movement. Here one reads clearly the philosophy of bespoke marble work: Michelessi designs every staircase in dialogue with the room that hosts it, choosing materials, transparencies and finishes so that the whole sounds in tune, like an instrument. It is beauty made for daily life: solid, and conceived to endure. If you wish your marble staircase to become the gentle protagonist of your home, this image is a fine place to begin.

Monolithic staircase in white Carrara marble and stainless steel with the effect of stone carved from one block

White Carrara

As Though Carved from a Single Block

It seems carved from a single block: the staircase rises folding upon itself like an origami of stone, and white Carrara marble clads its every surface with perfect continuity. The grey veining crosses treads and risers without interruption, feeding the illusion of the monolith; the stainless steel blade of the parapet cuts the composition with a clean reflection, the sole counterpoint to the stone. Around it, the setting is essential: white walls, a floor of great dark slabs, natural light entering through the glazing to caress the edges. It is an exercise in rigour where nothing may be approximate: the monolithic effect is born of calibrated cuts and a knowing pairing of the slabs, so that the eye never finds the joint. This is bespoke marble work in its purest form: Michelessi constructs the illusion of a single stone with the patience of those who know every vein and where it must continue. Italian craftsmanship, here, becomes almost invisible: its masterpiece is to pass unnoticed. If you love a minimalism that conceals great constructive complexity, a monolithic staircase in Carrara marble is the definitive choice.

Light stone staircase in a historic residence with curved flight and richly decorated wrought iron railing

Pale stone — Historic residences

The Memory of a Palazzo from Another Age

The great arched windows let in the green of the trees and a light from another age, which settles upon the pale stone steps and kindles their surface with tenderness. The curved flight descends, opening at its base into concentric steps, while the wrought iron railing, a dark embroidery of volutes and leaves, accompanies it with the richness of the grand period residences. It is the atmosphere of a stately home: high ceilings, walls of pale stone, a silence one can breathe. Images like this remind us where the craft comes from: the staircases of historic palazzi were for centuries the proving ground of the marble masters, and they remain an absolute reference of proportion and grace. Michelessi carries this inheritance into its bespoke marble work: staircases that speak the language of tradition with the precision of today, curves modelled by the rules of the art, ornament in dialogue with the stone. Handcrafted in Italy means a long memory: gestures handed down, measures the eye recognises before reason does, reverence for the material. If you own, or dream of, a classical interior and wish to give it a staircase worthy of its history, that history is one we know well.

Staircase with Verde Guatemala marble treads and white marble risers, green skirting and silvered console

Verde Guatemala

Verde Guatemala on Purest White

Contrast is the heart of this composition: the treads in Verde Guatemala marble, dark and crossed by white veining like branches under snow, rest upon risers in purest white marble. The first step widens and rounds itself into an invitation, the green skirting runs along the wall taking up the theme, and the console with its silvered scrolls adds a precious note to the scene. The white floor, polished to a mirror, doubles every element, immersing the whole in a refined light. It is a design that plays on two colours alone, and for that very reason admits no hesitation: the choice of the slabs, the orientation of the veining, the precision of the rounded edges, everything must be exact. In bespoke marble work, Michelessi builds these equilibria with an artisan's patience: every Verde Guatemala tread is selected so that the stone's natural drawing continues harmoniously up the ascent. It is a craft of details: you recognise it in the edge, in the slender joint, in the reflection that betrays no imperfection. If you desire a marble staircase of elegant, resolute character, the dialogue between green and white is a classic that never ceases to surprise.

Central single-flight staircase in white Carrara marble with twin richly worked wrought iron railings

White Carrara

A Single Flight, a Stately Entrance

The perspective is perfectly central, as befits the grand entrances: the staircase rises in a single flight, straight toward the upper floor, dressed in white Carrara marble and embraced by two richly worked wrought iron railings that open at the base in volutes, like theatre curtains. The pale marble floor carries the gaze toward the first step, the white doors on either side preserve the symmetry, and above, the balustraded gallery frames the scene with its dark ornament. It is an entrance conceived to welcome: whoever steps inside understands at once that the house has a heart, and that the heart is the staircase. Carrara marble, with its diffuse light, gives the composition the tone of a timeless classical residence. To craft a flight like this is to guard the symmetry in every detail: Michelessi's bespoke marble work unites the precise cutting of the treads with the dialogue of forged iron, so that stone and metal rise together, step after step. It is Italian craftsmanship for the grand occasions: stately, yet never cold. If you desire an entrance that welcomes with authority and grace, this is the path to follow.

Classic staircase in light marble with rounded first steps, wrought iron railing and inlaid marble floor

Pale marble — Classic layout

Steps That Open Like an Invitation

The first steps widen and round themselves, descending into the hall like a wave of pale stone: it is the signature gesture of the classically composed staircase, an invitation to draw near that precedes the climb. The wrought iron railing draws generous volutes down to the newel post, crowned by its finial; below, the inlaid floor composes geometries of light and dark that converse with the stone of the flight. At the end of the corridor, the light of the garden enters through the French doors and crosses the room, brushing the green drapery and the upholstered armchair beside the small table with its lamp aglow. Everything tells of a house lived in with elegance, where marble accompanies every step, from the inlays of the floor to the stairs themselves. Staircases like this are born of an ancient knowledge: shaping the stone to receive the stride with naturalness, widening it where needed, rounding it where the gesture asks. This is bespoke marble work as Michelessi intends it: faithful to the rules of the art, attentive to proportion, able to hold stone, iron and light in one accord. These pages have been written for centuries: we continue to write them, one staircase at a time.

Curved double-flight staircase with landing in Sodalite Royal marble and decorated wrought iron railings

Sodalite Royal

Double Flight in Sodalite Royal Marble

Beneath the crystal chandelier, the staircase divides into two curved flights that descend embracing the salon, joined by the upper landing: a choreography of stone and wrought iron worthy of a great residence. Sodalite Royal marble dresses the steps and floors with its warm tones and precious movement, while the dark railings, embroidered with volutes, accompany the curves with surprising lightness. The white roses in the great vase, the leather-toned sofas, the wall lights aglow: every element takes part in an atmosphere at once suspended, luminous and hushed. A double flight with a landing is among the most fascinating challenges of bespoke marble work: the mirrored curves must correspond to perfection, the fan-shaped treads demand individual cuts, the drawing of the stone must be orchestrated along the entire descent. Michelessi approaches such projects with the serenity of those who know the craft: measuring, selecting, shaping, refining. It is Italian craftsmanship in its most scenographic form, where the staircase becomes interior architecture and declaration of style in one. If your space can welcome a gesture this expansive, Sodalite Royal marble will know how to give it voice.

Staircase, floor and walls in Carrara marble with satin-finish iron railing of sinuous design

White Carrara

Carrara Everywhere: Staircase, Walls, Floor

Here Carrara marble is not a detail: it is the very atmosphere of the room. Floor, walls and staircase speak the same language of veined white, and the light entering through the glazed door glides across the surfaces, drawing long reflections. The curved flight rises on the right, accompanied by a satin-finish iron railing of sinuous, almost botanical design, adding movement to the stillness of the stone. The dark side table with its small lamp aglow is the counterpoint of shadow: all the rest is brightness. To clad an entire room in a single marble is an exercise in coherence that demands a meticulous selection of the slabs: the veining must follow on naturally from floor to walls, up to the steps turning toward the floor above. It is the kind of project in which bespoke marble work reveals its completeness: Michelessi tends the whole as a single work, from the choice of the material to the final polish. The white of Carrara is the most recognised emblem of Italian stonework in the world: to bring it home is to live each day inside that tradition. If you imagine a total environment, luminous and timeless, this image shows you how far it can reach.

Grand staircase with central flight dividing into two curved arms, dark steps and wrought iron railings

Stone and wrought iron

A Flight That Divides in Symmetry

The flight begins as one, at the centre, then divides into two curved arms that rise mirroring each other: it is the symmetry of the great staircases of honour, here rendered in a domestic key beneath an iron chandelier of warm lights. The dark steps, framed by pale bands, draw the movement; the wrought iron railings, dense with volutes and scrolls, wrap the composition like dark lace, and the two great vases with their slender branches stand guard on either side of the departure. The arches, the white doors, the wall lights: everything conspires toward an atmosphere warm and welcoming, where grandeur never turns to coldness. A staircase that divides is an exercise in compositional balance: the curves must correspond, the transitions must flow without hesitation, the rhythm of the steps must remain identical in both arms. These are the challenges that the bespoke working of marble and stone meets with method: Michelessi studies every project so that the symmetry is perfect to the eye and to the stride. Italian craftsmanship loves these generous architectures: they know how to welcome, to astonish, to endure. If your home deserves a staircase of honour, let us begin to draw it together.

Custom staircase in Brown Night marble with bullnose edge, curved glass parapet and backlit rose window

Brown Night

Brown Night Marble, the Bullnose Edge

The flight rises broad and luminous, its pale treads bordered by dark bands that mark the rhythm like a musical score: this is Brown Night marble, worked to measure with the edge shaped as a bullnose, soft to the touch and to the eye. The curved glass parapet yields to the ascent without interrupting it, supported by a pale handrail that draws a continuous line in the air; above, the great backlit rose window radiates its geometry like an indoor sun. The walls of honed stone, the plants, the reflections on the dark floor: every element amplifies the sensation of amplitude and calm. The bullnose finish is one of those workings that tell of the craft: the edge of each step is rounded with constant precision, tread after tread, so that hand and eye always find the same softness. In its bespoke marble work, Michelessi executes these finishes with the care of Italian craftsmanship: precise tools, continuous control, sensitivity to the material. A staircase like this unites comfort and stature: broad, luminous, sure. If you seek a marble of warm tone and a finish you can feel beneath your fingers, Brown Night worked to a bullnose is an excellent answer.

Classic staircase in Golden Cream marble with wrought iron railing and light floor with dark diamond inlays

Golden Cream

Classic Lines in Golden Cream Marble

The light passes through the railing and draws a weave of shadows upon the floor: it is the first gift of this staircase of classic lines, crafted in Golden Cream marble. The steps, warm and even in tone, rise along the wall, accompanied by wrought iron worked in volutes and by a gilded handrail that adds a precious note; the first step rounds itself at the departure, as tradition asks. On the ground, the pale floor is punctuated by dark diamond inlays that give rhythm to its expanse, and beyond, the open doors let the gaze run through a succession of luminous rooms. It is the sober elegance of well-made houses: no excess, authentic materials, right proportions. Golden Cream marble, with its cream-gold tonality, brings warmth without surrendering the light: a choice that passes through fashions without growing old. In bespoke marble work, Michelessi interprets this classicism with an artisan's precision: finished edges, impeccable installation, a harmonious dialogue between stone and iron. It is Italian craftsmanship that need not raise its voice to be recognised. If you desire a staircase that seems always to have been there, Golden Cream is its natural material.

Modern staircase with corner entrance in Grigio Carnico marble and illuminated handrail recessed in the wall

Grigio Carnico

Grigio Carnico, the Corner Entrance

A line of light recessed into the wall accompanies the ascent, bending where the staircase bends: it is the illuminated handrail of this modern flight with its corner entrance, crafted in Grigio Carnico marble. The first steps widen and turn the corner, opening toward the room like an invitation; then the flight rises with resolve, the profile of the steps standing out against the pale wall in a clean sequence. The deep grey of the stone, crossed by white veining like ribs of ice, converses with the dark floor and with the details of glass and steel: the transparent side table, the candleholders, the white orchid that softens the scene. It is a contemporary design that proves how modern marble can be: ancient material, present-day drawing. The corner entrance, the turning steps, the integrated light: every choice is born of a careful study of the space, the study Michelessi devotes to each of its bespoke marble works, made in Italy from the first sketch to the final polish. Precise cuts, crisp edges, surfaces that capture the light and hold it. If you seek a marble staircase of contemporary, enveloping character, Grigio Carnico has exactly the right depth.

Have a marble sample sent to your home

The colour of a marble cannot be judged on a screen. That is why we send samples of the stones and finishes you are considering, so you can compare them in the real light of your room, against your floors and cabinet doors. Should you prefer, we will show you slabs and samples in our Aprilia showroom, on the Via Pontina.

Frequently asked questions

Marble staircases, ascents crafted to perfection: questions and answers

How thick is a marble stair tread?

Marble treads are typically 2-3 cm thick, with a thinner matching riser; cantilevered steps or blades emerging from a wall use thicker solid pieces, sized to the structural design. The exact thickness depends on the marble chosen, the width of the flight and the type of structure. Every staircase is drawn to your measurements before cutting.

Is a marble staircase slippery, and does it wear?

A mirror-polished marble staircase is superb but deserves careful thought: for safety we can give the tread a honed or brushed finish, or set a non-slip profile along the nosing. Marble is a dense stone that stands up well to daily use; with ordinary care and a neutral cleaner the veining stays vivid for decades. For outdoor stairways we select stones and finishes that withstand sun and rain.

Do you make spiral, curved or floating staircases?

Yes: curved flights, spiral staircases, cantilevered steps that let the light filter through, double flights for grand residences and outdoor stairways. Every tread is shaped to follow the exact curve of the drawing, and the veining is oriented slab by slab so the joint disappears from view. We can integrate handrails recessed into the wall and lighting that accompanies the ascent, step by step.

Which marbles do you recommend for a staircase?

White Carrara and Calacatta for a luminous ascent, travertine in the warm tones of sand, Rosewood with its soft veining, the deep greens of Levanto and Guatemala, Grigio Carnico, through to rare marbles such as Blue Light Ivory and Sodalite Royal. Outdoors we choose dense stones and non-slip finishes. We choose the slab together with you, in person, at our Aprilia workshop.

Are Michelessi staircases made in Italy?

Yes, made entirely in Italy: from block to installation, every staircase takes shape in our workshop on Via Pontina in Aprilia, between Rome and Latina, where we have worked marble since 1976. Cutting, shaping of the treads, edge finishing and polishing are carried out by our own craftsmen, with fifty years of experience in the trade.

Do you deliver and install marble staircases abroad?

Yes. We survey the space, design the staircase and produce every numbered step in Aprilia; we then ship throughout Italy and overseas, with installation by our own team or shop drawings for your local fitter. We have already carried out projects outside Italy, including one in Dubai. Lead times and shipping are set out in the estimate, which is free of charge.

Bespoke

Your staircase
begins with a meeting

Tell us about the space that will welcome your staircase: the measurements, the light, the character you wish to give it. Together we will choose the marble or the stone, design the flight around your space and follow it from the block to the final polishing — entirely in Italy, as we have done since 1976. The estimate is free: write to us, or come and visit us in Aprilia.
