to polished stone

01 A block of Grigio Pieno marble aggregate rests on two timber beams in the dark workshop, under the spotlight. Rough surfaces, chipped corners, white chips barely visible under the dust. Mallet and chisels lie on the floor: the console is still all inside the stone.

02 Two stonemasons, seen from behind in the light, work the block with mallet and chisel. The faces are squared, the depth shrinks, chips and white dust rise into the spotlight. Then the opening between the two legs is marked and cut, the edges are trimmed, the surfaces honed by hand and by machine: slowly, without haste, the shape comes out of the block.

03 At the end the stone is polished in slow passes: the grey matrix turns to a mirror and the white, cream and pink chips catch the light. The console remains, a single piece, and a veil of dust on the floor.

This is a vision from our design studio — the very portrait of marble terrazzo, a material that holds together the strength of the building site and the grace of polished stone. It is for you to decide which of the two faces to show — or whether to show them both.

The collection

Twenty-eight days
to become stone

Marble terrazzo is an agglomerate composed of roughly 93% natural marble and a small percentage of mineral binder: no resins, only stone and the oldest binder in the history of building. It is produced in vacuum-formed blocks of a standardised format — 305 × 124 × 84 centimetres — on state-of-the-art plants, and then left to rest: a curing period of at least twenty-eight days, so that the binder sets to the very heart of the block and the material truly becomes one.

Only then is the block sawn into slabs, ready for floors, cladding, staircases, sills and ventilated facades. And since we always begin from the whole block, slab thicknesses are obtained on request: the designer chooses the measure, we saw it. It is a material that joins the sober, contemporary character of terrazzo to the minute nobility of the marble chips that inhabit it — a modern, honest terrazzo, made to last, which we craft to measure in the Michelessi workshop in Aprilia alongside our natural marbles, as we have done since 1976, in the finest tradition of Italian workmanship.

The collection speaks two languages: Grigio Pieno, a full grey sown with pale fragments, and White Pietra, a terrazzo of light. Two variants only, yet capable of dressing an entire building, from floor to facade.

Grey terrazzo is the happy meeting of two worlds: the nobility of marble and the solidity of terrazzo. Within its grey matrix presses a minute grain of white, grey and faintly rose marble flakes, giving the surface the discreet vibration of an Italian piazza seen from above. It is an authentic marble terrazzo: an agglomerate obtained from roughly 93 per cent natural marble and a small percentage of mineral binder, produced in vacuum-cast blocks of standard format, 305 by 124 by 84 centimetres, in plants of the latest technology.

After a minimum curing of 28 days, the blocks are sawn into slabs destined for floors, cladding, staircases, windowsills and ventilated facades; starting from the block, slab thicknesses can be made on request. Its tranquil grey is a perfect foundation for contemporary architecture: it carries the volumes, accompanies the light, never ages. White terrazzo is a brightness born of stone: across the luminous white ground spread marble flakes in tones of grey, taupe and ochre, dense and minute, like river gravel seen through the clearest water. It is the most luminous variant of marble terrazzo: an agglomerate obtained from roughly 93 per cent natural marble and a small percentage of mineral binder, produced in vacuum-cast blocks of standard format, 305 by 124 by 84 centimetres, in plants of the latest technology.

What is marble terrazzo?

Marble terrazzo is an agglomerate made of roughly 93% natural marble bound by a small share of mineral binder: no resins, only stone and the oldest binder in the history of building. It is produced in vacuum-formed blocks of a standard size (305 × 124 × 84 cm) and then sawn into slabs. It is the modern heir to Venetian terrazzo, with white, grey and pinkish marble chips visible in the matrix.

Why does the block have to cure for twenty-eight days?

Because a mineral binder sets slowly: it needs at least twenty-eight days to harden right through to the heart of the block, so that the material truly becomes one. Only then is the block sawn into slabs ready for working. It is patience that pays off: the slab that results is stable, dense and made to last.

What is the difference between marble terrazzo and marble resin?

The binder. In marble terrazzo the chips are held by a mineral binder, giving a sober, tactile surface close to the terrazzo tradition; in marble resin the binder is a polyester resin, which yields a denser, more uniform surface. Both are made almost entirely of real marble and are worked to measure in the same workshop in Aprilia.

In what thicknesses is marble terrazzo available?

Since we always start from the whole block, slab thicknesses are cut to order: the designer states the size and we saw it. The most common thicknesses for floors and cladding remain 2 and 3 centimetres, but a stair tread, a window sill or a ventilated facade may call for different dimensions, which we agree during design and confirm in the quotation.

Where is marble terrazzo used?

For floors, wall cladding, staircases, window sills and ventilated facades: the two variants in the collection, Grigio Pieno and White Pietra, can dress an entire building from floor to facade. It is a sober, contemporary material that supports the volumes of modern architecture and does not date. Like all marble-based materials, it should be protected from acids and cleaned with neutral detergents.

Do you make marble terrazzo to measure for projects abroad, and is it made in Italy?

Yes. Our workshop in Aprilia, between Rome and Latina, has been working stone to measure since 1976: marble terrazzo is sawn and finished there alongside natural marbles, with the same craftsman's care. We follow projects in Italy and abroad with 3D design, site survey and installation by our own team; delivery and lead times are set out in the quotation.
