a bench for the living room

01 A raw block of Calacatta rests on the dark floor of the living room, in front of the window at sunset. Mallet, chisels and rasp already lie on the floor: the bench is still all inside the stone.

02 Two stonemasons, seen from behind, work with small, repeated blows: the faces are squared, the chips fly, then the chisel opens the shadow gap under the seat. The shape comes out of the block slowly; toothed chisel, rasp and diamond pad take away the marks, and water shows the veins.

03 Last comes polishing, by hand, in slow circles: the Calacatta catches the light and the window mirrors in the seat. The tools stay on the floor, the bench is finished: this is how, from the block and the drawing, a piece for your interiors is born.

The Suite Where Pale Marble Meets Wood

The suite flows without boundaries: from the bathing area with its two grey basins resting on a white shelf, before a wall of hexagonal mosaic with pearly reflections, to the bed with its light wood frame, caressed by the light of white curtains. Underfoot, the floor narrates the passage: pale marble with golden veining spreads its elegance through the sleeping area, while planks of natural wood mark the entrance like a textured carpet. The log stools, the cream throw, the small armchair with its blue cushion: every detail speaks of quiet. This is the essence of interior design as Michelessi signs it: materials of the first order, from natural stones to large formats, composed to measure to make your interiors unique. Here the working of marble meets the softness of wood and the calligraphy of mosaic, in the Italian artisan manner that knows how to draw rooms where wellbeing can be breathed with eyes closed.

Black granite

Black Granite: Strength Beneath Your Fingertips

The camera drops until it almost brushes the surface: the black granite reveals its flamed skin, a miniature landscape of crystals and shadows that the window's light kindles point by point. The clean edge of the worktop cuts the frame on the diagonal, the full thickness of the stone in view; further along, the steel knobs of the gas hob emerge from the dark material like the controls of an elegant ship. Out of focus, the landscape beyond the glass hints at the daily life this worktop will accompany for decades. This is granite in its most authentic interpretation: immensely hard, tactile, indifferent to heat and time, its flamed finish lending grip and depth to the colour. In Michelessi's interior design, kitchen worktops like this are born from the bespoke working of natural stone: millimetric precision in the cuts and recesses, and the artisan hand that turns the sternest of rocks into a trusted companion in the kitchen.

The colour of a marble cannot be judged on a screen. That is why we send samples of the stones and finishes you are considering, so you can compare them in the real light of your room, against your floors and cabinet doors. Should you prefer, we will show you slabs and samples in our Aprilia showroom, on the Via Pontina.

Which materials can I choose for floors and wall cladding?

It all starts with the slab: natural stones, marbles such as Calacatta, Statuario and Portoro, travertine, granites, onyxes, right through to large-format porcelain stoneware. Our experts help you match the right material to each surface and each budget, because a hallway floor, a shower wall and a kitchen worktop each call for a different stone.

Which finish works best for a marble or stone floor?

A polished finish brings out the veining and the depth of colour, but in busy or wet areas a honed or satin surface is wiser: more matte and less slippery. A split-face finish, with the stone left natural, gives character to walls and exterior cladding; flamed granite offers grip and depth of colour, as on the flamed black granite worktop shown on this page. The finish is chosen together, surface by surface.

Do you take measurements on site?

Yes. Our technicians come to the site, study the spaces and take detailed measurements of every element, from thresholds to cladding. Slabs, tiles and worktops then leave the Aprilia workshop cut to millimetric precision, so that every piece arrives ready to lay, with adjustments on site kept to a minimum.

Do you work with architects and design studios?

Yes, we have long collaborated with architects, interior designers and specifiers, for private residences as well as offices, hotels and large commissions. We work from your drawings or develop the project together, with material samples and 3D design before the first cut. Clients without a designer can rely directly on our own experts.

Are Michelessi interiors made in Italy?

Yes. Every slab, threshold, cladding panel and worktop is cut, finished and checked in our workshop in Aprilia, between Rome and Latina, where we have worked stone since 1976. The stones are selected by our artisans, and the work combines modern machinery with the expert hand of an Italian workshop.

Do you create marble interiors outside Italy?

Yes. We have completed residences, offices and hotels in Italy and around the world, including the Dubai project. Materials are worked and numbered in Aprilia, packed in crates and shipped to the destination; on request our own team also oversees installation abroad. Delivery times and costs are confirmed with the estimate.
