The floor — a Michelessi vision

Slab after slab,
the signature floor

01 A dark penthouse above the lit city, and a bare screed floor. At the left, the black marble slabs stand on their rack: the floor is still all to be laid.

02 Two fitters work with their backs to the room: they spread the adhesive, lower each slab with suction lifters, settle it with a rubber mallet and carry the vein from one slab to the next, like the pages of an open book. Then the joints are filled, the surface is honed with diamond pads and the groove for the brass lines is cut, without haste.

03 Then the marble is polished: the stone turns to a mirror, the white veins come alive, the brass lines close the joints and the city is reflected in the floor. The finished room remains, and a veil of dust at the foot of the pillars.

Design vision: penthouse entirely clad in book-matched marble, with full-height glazing over the city lit up at night

Walls, ceiling and floor in a single marble, book-matched like the pages of an open volume; beyond the glazing, the city burning bright to the horizon. This is one of the visions of our design studio: a penthouse where the stone does not clad the space — it is the space, and the lights outside glide across the polished floor as across a lake. A dream project, drawn for those who look upon the city from above.

Design vision: grand salon with a sweeping white marble staircase and a lit fireplace framed in black marble

The staircase descends in a curve like a curtain drawing open, white against the darkened walls; across the salon, the black marble fireplace burns and fills the stone with warm reflections. This is a vision from our design studio: the grand salon told through its two oldest gestures — climbing, and lingering beside the fire. Between the two, only darkness, brass and marble.

that begins with the material

For almost fifty years, in the Aprilia workshop, Michelessi has been turning raw material into places to live. Since 1976 bespoke marble craftsmanship has been the heart of our trade: marble, natural stone, wood and steel chosen slab by slab, cut, honed and laid with the patience of Italian craftsmanship. Around this knowledge has grown a story of homes, offices, hotels and major commissions, built together with leading architects and designers, in Italy and around the world.

On this page we gather our projects, two different roads of the same journey. There is interior design, where natural stones, granites, onyxes and large formats dress interiors tailored around those who will live in them. And there is the Dubai project, carrying the quality of Italian making into the residences of the Gulf: marble interiors, outdoor kitchens and solar pergolas conceived for a new way of living in the open air. Further down, the visions around the world tell how far this journey can reach.

The colour of a marble cannot be judged on a screen. That is why we send samples of the stones and finishes you are considering, so you can compare them in the real light of your room, against your floors and cabinet doors. Should you prefer, we will show you slabs and samples in our Aprilia showroom, on the Via Pontina.

Our projects: questions and answers

What kind of projects does Michelessi carry out?

Bespoke interiors in marble, natural stone, granite, onyx and large-format porcelain stoneware: floors, cladding, staircases, fireplaces, bathrooms and both indoor and outdoor kitchens. We work on homes, offices, hotels and large supply contracts, alongside architects and designers, in Italy and abroad. The Dubai project brings this same way of working to residences in the Gulf.

How does a project unfold, from first contact to installation?

It starts with a meeting in which you tell us about the space and your needs; our technicians then carry out the site survey and take the measurements. Next comes the 3D design, with materials chosen slab by slab and finishes selected (polished, satin, split-face or honed). Finally the pieces are made in our Aprilia workshop and installed to the highest standard by our own team. Timing and costs are set out in the quotation, which is free of charge.

Are the visions around the world completed projects?

No, and we say so plainly: Monte Carlo, New York, London, Saint-Moritz, Lake Como and Miami Beach are design visions, stories of what our workshop could bring to the world's finest residences. The Dubai project, by contrast, is real: from our workshop in Italy, bespoke marble interiors, outdoor kitchens and solar pergolas for residences in the Gulf, with design, production and installation in the home carried out by our own craftsmen.

Do you take on projects abroad?

Yes. Every element is designed and made in Aprilia, between Rome and Latina, then crated and shipped within Italy and overseas; on request our own team follows the installation abroad as well, as in the Dubai project. Our technicians can carry out surveys and detailed measurements on site, wherever the project is.

Do you work with the client's own architect?

Gladly: it is how we usually work. Our projects are born in close collaboration with architects and designers, from the survey and the shop drawings to the choice of slabs. If you do not yet have a designer, our own experts will guide you through the design and the finishes of your rooms.

What does it mean that your projects are Made in Italy since 1976?

It means that everything, from the drawing to the cutting of the slabs, comes from our workshop in Aprilia, Italy, where the same family has been working stone to the highest standard for half a century. Marble, natural stone, wood and steel are chosen slab by slab, cut, honed and installed with the patience of Italian craftsmanship. That continuity, from 1976 to today, guarantees you the same standard in a home in Rome as in a residence in Dubai.
