Since 1976, Michelessi has devoted itself to the craft of marble for the construction and furniture industries. In our workshop in Aprilia, on the Via Pontina, a highly qualified team transforms slabs of marble and natural stone into bespoke works: personalised pieces of enduring quality, born where the artisan's gesture meets the precision of the machine. The scene unfolds in two acts: on one side the deep shadow of the dark walls, on the other the whiteness of grey-veined white marble, wrapping the wall and raising the bathtub on a platform cut from the same stone. The oval tub, white and absolute, floats in this suspended light: the round mirror hanging from its strap, the taps tracing an arc of silver, the shower kept behind slender panes of glass. There comes a moment when a wall ceases to be a backdrop and becomes the protagonist. Here it happens with a three-dimensional surface of white hexagonal blocks, advancing and receding like the pipes of a geometric organ: light grazes them from the side and each element casts its own small shadow, composing a relief that changes with the hours of the day. In this living room it finds one in a surround of grey marble, crossed by pale veins that look like petrified smoke: the flame dances at the centre, and the stone around it gathers the warmth with the calm of one who does not fear time. In the heart of the workshop, the head of a numerically controlled machining centre descends onto the slab anchored to its suction cups: water wraps the tool in a crown of fine spray, cooling the cut, carrying away the dust, and for an instant technique resembles a fountain. On the machine's flank, the number 30 and the compass of its axes tell the nature of this instrument: calibrated movements, repeated with the same precision on the first piece and on the thousandth.
