From the slab,

01 A flat slab of Statuario, still rough from the saw, waits in the dark under the spotlight. The drawing of the drapery is only traced in gold chalk, chisels and mallet lie on the floor: the folds are still all inside the stone.

02 Two marble masters, seen from behind, work with many small blows. First the grooves are opened and the stone is removed in steps, then the steps are rounded and the folds are born one after another, from left to right, without haste. White dust rises into the light and settles.

03 Then the stone is honed and polished: the crests catch the light, the hollows stay full of shadow, the veins can be read. The thin brass frame closes the edge. The carved wall remains, and a veil of dust on the floor.

What is a 3D marble wall?

It is a wall cladding sculpted in natural stone: geometric or floral bas-reliefs, waves and fans in relief, inlays of onyx and coloured marbles, woven mosaics, fretwork that lets light through and book-matched slabs with mirrored veining. The surface is no longer flat, and grazing light turns it into a drawing. Every wall is a one-off, designed for a specific room and its light.

Can a 3D wall be made to measure for my room?

Yes, it is the only way we work. A floor plan, a few photographs or even just an idea is enough: from there comes the design, which guides the milling machine; then the craftsman's hand decides where the relief should catch the light and where it should rest. Pattern, material and finish are chosen together, in our Aprilia workshop or remotely.

Can a marble wall be backlit?

Yes. Onyx, being translucent, glows from within; fretwork lets the light through like a natural stained-glass window; the joints between blocks can carry a light that draws them like constellations across the room. The light source is planned at the design stage, so cables and housings stay hidden behind the stone.

Which materials do you use, and how much does a marble wall weigh?

We work mainly with Bianco Statuario, gold-veined white marble, black marble, onyx, natural stones and brass profiles. The starting slabs are usually 2-3 cm thick, and the relief is carved out of that thickness; a 2 cm slab weighs roughly 55 kg per square metre. That is why anchoring and the fixing system are engineered in the design, including for plasterboard walls.

How do you clean a sculpted marble wall? Is it suitable for bathrooms and kitchens?

Marble is calcium carbonate and dislikes acids, so it should be cleaned with water and a neutral detergent; the relief is dusted with a soft cloth or brush. 3D walls suit bathrooms and bedrooms beautifully; in a kitchen we recommend keeping some distance from the hob and applying a protective treatment, renewed over time as with any marble surface.

Are your 3D walls made in Italy? Do you install abroad?

Every wall is designed and carved in our Aprilia workshop, between Rome and Latina, where we have been working marble since 1976: fifty years of Italian craftsmanship. In Italy we install with our own team; for projects abroad we prepare the numbered pieces, crate them and follow shipping and installation, as we did for our Dubai project.
