Marble Kitchens in Rome, from the Aprilia Workshop

A marble kitchen for a Roman home is born a short drive from the city. The Michelessi SRL workshop stands in Aprilia, on the Via Pontina at kilometre 45.350. Since 1976 it has produced worktops, islands, splashbacks and complete kitchens in marble and stone, designed and built to measure for apartments, penthouses and villas in Rome and its province. We carry out the site survey at your home, free of charge; you see the design in three dimensions before the first cut; and the kitchen is fitted by our own team.

Aprilia lies about 45 kilometres from Rome-EUR, and the Pontina links it to the city without a single detour: from most districts you can be standing in front of our showroom in under an hour. It means you can come and choose your slab in person and be home by the afternoon. Our technicians reach your property for the survey just as easily, and if an extra piece or an adjustment is needed during installation, the workshop is within reach. Having the stonemason an hour down the road, rather than five hundred kilometres away, changes how closely the work can be followed.

The first step costs nothing. Telephone us, write on WhatsApp or e-mail a few photographs of the kitchen with rough measurements taken by hand: that is enough for an initial assessment. Then we come to you, in the city or in the towns of the province — from the coast at Ostia and Fregene to the Castelli Romani, out along the Cassia and the Tiburtina — for a precise survey of the space, the walls and the water, gas and electrical connections. The survey and the quotation are free and without obligation; delivery and installation dates are agreed together with the quotation.

How the work unfolds

• Survey at your home: measurements to the millimetre, and a check of entrances, lifts and staircases for bringing the slabs in.
• 3D design: the finished kitchen placed in your room, with materials, finishes and proportions to weigh up before you decide.
• Choosing the slab: in person at Aprilia, one by one, with the veining oriented as you will see it at home.
• CNC cutting and hand finishing: edges, cut-outs for sink and hob, waterfall ends and joints, all worked in the workshop.
• Installation by our own team: the people who fit the kitchen know the project from the first drawing.

Rome has no single kind of home, and a marble kitchen must be thought out for the space that holds it. Three recurring settings, three different questions for the stonemason.

Penthouses and terraces

In Parioli, Prati, the Aventine and Monteverde, and equally in EUR and northern Rome, the penthouse draws the kitchen towards the light and the terrace. Here the marble island becomes the heart of the home, often in full view of the living room: solid worktops of 2 or 3 centimetres, a waterfall end mitred at 45 degrees to carry the vein down the side, a sink carved from the same slab. Access to the upper floor is the first thing we check: long slabs and small lifts are reconciled through a joint plan drawn up in advance, not improvised in your home.

Villas with gardens

Along the Appia Antica, out on the Cassia, at Olgiata, in the Castelli Romani and towards the sea, the villa calls for a kitchen in conversation with the outdoors. The interior marble can continue outside as an outdoor kitchen in marble, granite or quartzite, with a barbecue and oven in refractory stone, drawn in the same language. Here the choice of material takes account of sun, rain and salt air, and the installation follows the rhythm of the building work on the house.

Apartments in historic palazzi

In the centro storico, in Trastevere, in Monti and the rioni around Piazza Navona, the kitchen lives in rooms with high ceilings, old floors, narrow doorways and staircases without a lift. Marble has been part of Roman houses for centuries, and a made-to-measure kitchen makes it possible to respect walls that are out of square, alcoves and windows that cannot be moved. The survey and the 3D design exist for exactly this: bringing a new kitchen into a house that already has its history, without forcing it.

Our advice always begins with how you live in your kitchen. Calacatta, Statuario and Carrara are the classic whites: luminous, suited to rooms that want to feel larger; travertine is the city's own stone and brings a warmth no engineered material imitates; Nero Marquina and Botticino lend depth or softness according to the scheme; onyx, backlit, turns an island into a lantern. For those who cook a great deal and want a surface that asks for no attention, we propose Dekton, Laminam, composite quartz or Fenix for the working surface, with real marble on the island, the splashback or the sides: the home keeps stone where it is seen and touched, and practicality where it is needed. Typical thicknesses 2 and 3 centimetres; edges straight, chamfered, bullnosed or split-face; finishes polished, honed or brushed: all decided in front of the slabs, not a sample.
